Yes! Stress can impact not only how you feel emotionally, but stress can also take a toll on your physical wellbeing.

The mind-body connection may be described as a feedback loop between a person's body and mind: the way that a person feels has influence over how they think and vice versa. This communication between your thoughts and feelings is the mind-body connection.

To meditate with mindful breathing is to bring body and mind back to the present moment so that you do not miss your appointment with life. – Thich Nhat Hanh

The Mind-Body Connection of Therapeutic Breathing

  • Breathing patterns change when you’re distressed.

  • Diaphragmatic breathing can decrease your psychological and biochemical stress.

  • Nasal breathing has evolutionary value and can a feeling of calm and relaxation.

  • Through deliberate breathing practice you can elicit a relaxation response.

You may have heard of 4x4 breathing, box breathing or square breathing. It's all the same thing and it is the easiest place to start if you are new to utilizing your breath to create a sense of relaxation and calm. It's quite simple...give it a try!

  1. Exhale to a count of four.

  2. Hold your lungs empty for a four-count.

  3. Inhale to a count of four.

  4. Hold the air in your lungs for a count of four.

  5. Exhale and begin the pattern anew.
